Why Exhale Family Therapy and Wellness?
One of my goals in working with clients is to create a space where you can relax, be yourself, and exhale. One of my favorite coping skills is the 4-7-8 breath pattern. When we exhale slowly we activate our parasympathetic nervous system which helps us to relax. Our breath is something we always have with us wherever we go and can be so powerful in helping us to soothe. Additionally, I love doing yoga and the intentional mind/body connection has been my go to form of self care to reset. What in your life helps you to exhale?
What can I expect from meeting with you?
I offer a 10-15 minute initial consultation call to talk briefly about why you are seeking therapy and to determine if I may be a good fit to work with you. Prior to our first session, I will send intake paperwork for you to complete through a HIPAA compliant portal with Simple Practice. In our first session, I will spend time getting to know you and your story. Usually we talk about how you were hoping therapy would be helpful, previous experiences of therapy, and what it might look like when you don’t need therapy anymore. I am trained as a Marital and Family Therapist which means I think systemically. I am curious about your physical health, family of origin, social connections, employment, and what is important to you. Anxiety can show up in anticipation of a first therapy session and that is normal and OK! After 1-3 sessions, clients are able to determine if we are a good fit to work together. We will work collaboratively to determine the direction of therapy and I will lay out a treatment plan. I typically meet with my clients weekly and toward the later stages of therapy, will spread out sessions to biweekly or monthly. Eventually, clients graduate from therapy and my goal is to make it a positive experience. Clients are invited to reach out if they need support in the future.
How does Telehealth work?
Telehealth can be a great option. My first experience working virtually with clients started during quarantine and I was so glad I tried it! It is a great option for a variety of people. I find that once we get to know each other, we forget we are meeting virtually and our time together feels natural. I use Simple Practice; a HIPAA compliant platform. Simple Practice is easy to use and each week you will receive a new link for our virtual session. At the time of our session, simply click on the link in your e-mail, a video screen will open, and I will meet you there. Telehealth works best if you have a good internet connection and if you are in a place where you feel comfortable to talk freely. Clients have found the convenience of Telehealth to be a game-changer. The therapeutic relationship is so important and meeting virtually does not impact that. In our initial consultation/contact we will determine if Telehealth is appropriate for you based on what you are presenting with and the severity of your symptoms. Telehealth is not the right fit for all people and I will work with you to find the level of support that meets your needs.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. EMDR is an 8 phase therapy treatment and can be effective for clients engaging in Telehealth or in-person sessions. I am EMDR Trained and regularly seek consultation to best support my clients. What can be gained from going to therapy?
There are a variety of reasons why someone would decide to meet with a therapist and it is OK if you aren’t quite sure. We can figure it out together. Here are some ways therapy can be helpful –

- Empowerment to take action guided by your values
- Slow down, reflect, and learn more about yourself and family of origin
- Identify unhelpful patterns of behavior or thinking and learn strategies that are more effective
- Improve a significant relationship with a partner, child, or family member
- Increase support through a difficult season of life
- To have a new relationship with anxiety, depression, and trauma
- To build family cohesion
- To be more present in your life and to stop simply surviving
